Book Release: hahaha a conversation between a photographic negative of my face and an unrepresented voice by Isoje Chou/ISOYE
ABOUT THE BOOK:
"In 2009 a curious conversation began between my face and my face. Thrown in was the subject ‘cosmophagy’. Who were the folks having this conversation? It was a conversation between an incorrigible, photographic negative of 'my face' and an unrepresented voice (or 'my self'?). The conversation became a video animation, THIS THING, and subsequently lost to a botched computer. The 'thing' point to was the underlying subject of their conversation: unbelonging. I had the primary parent stills, and these became, in 2019, the book, hahaha a conversation between a photographic negative of my face and an unrepresented voice. The project in print form became an opportunity for me to work with an idea of the photographic negative, which has always seemed to me like drawings made using very soft lead pencils (6B and above)...and book publishing" - excerpt, Foreword by the artist
Isoje Chou/ISOYE is interested in the position of the thing in the larger scheme of things, at the very least in this project. In 2018, with an eye towards the publication of independent ideas, she established the visual arts outfit Fufu/People With No Country to publish her ideas despite having no opportunities for same.
FUFU PRESS / PEOPLE WITH NO COUNTRY ERGO NO PEOPLE ERGO OPPORTUNITIES is a visual arts ideas outfit established by the artist in 2018. Named after West Africa’s hefty staple, FUFU is also well, fufu: fickle, flighty, even delirious. It may also be FU times 2, with the finger directed at anyone including the artist herself.
